Greatest Marine Racing Machines In the Country Are Entered in First American Competition for

Highest Speed on the W«ter.

Not since Sir Thomas Lipton last tried to lift the American cup has a nautical event attracted the widespread national attention being directed to the annual regatta this year of the Mississippi Valley Power Boat association at Dubuque, la., July 3, 4, 5 and 6. Two scores of the greatest marine racing machines in the country will be entered and 50,000 people from all parts of the land are expected to be present to see the world's records broken as predicted by W II. Fauber, inventor of the hydroplane, the new demon of speed.

In no field, excepting the conquest of the air, has there been the wonderful development during the past two or three years that has been seen in motor boats. A few years ago a boat making ten miles an hour was considered a millionaire's delight. Now the same boat is a "tub" and the millionaire toys, Instead, with a hydroplane which will sltlm over the water almost

at lightning speed—50 to 55 miles an hour. The Mississippi Valley races at Dubuque will be the first American competition of these new high-powered marine racers. The greatest boats produced in America this year have been entered, including "Dixie IV.," speed 55 miles an hour, "Vita II.," speed 50 miles an hour "Red Top," speed 50 miles an hour, "Yankee," with GOO horse power motors and speed estimater at between 50 and 55 miles an hour. Resides these there will be many other great boats, all in the international defender class, which it cost a fortune to build, and which are expected to trim the French and English speed liends in later races. All of these boats will receive their first public trials iu the Dubuque races. It will in fact be virtually the elimination for the international events to follow.

When Fauber thought he had the hydroplane idea perfected lie built 15 models before he secured one which demonstrated the success of his theory. Each of them rose to the surface of the water under power, but as the power was Increased the bow would sink and the motors had to be shut off to prevent them from going bow first to the bottom. The sixteenth boat built along his new idea was almost the same as the others, but contained some changes. The motors were installed and the motor started. The boat darted off like a streak, so fast, its occupants hardly knew what had happened so last, in fact, they shut off the power In fright. From that day the hydroplane has been a success and models are now in existence which have attained a speed of 57 miles per hour —faster than a limited passenger train.

Boaters and visitors will come to Dubuque from all sections and from all directions. The cruise of power boats will be one of the big features of the regattas. Power boats will begin to leave the fartlier reaches of the northern Mississippi, lower Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, St. Croix, Illinois and other rivers late in June, bound for

the regatta city, and scores ot boats will come from the great lakes. As the fleets progress the boats will be joined by others until the night of July 2, when the northern fleet anchors at Cassville, Wis., the northern rendezvous, and the southern fleet anchors at T3ellevue, the southern rendezvous. There will be hundreds of boats of all descriptions all ready to follow the reception fleet, which will come out from Dubuque to meet them, back Into the harbor the morning of July 3. The 3d will be devoted to the reception of visitors, and the big races start the afternoon of July 4. This day the 40foot class for such boats as "Dixie IV.," "Eph," "Red Top III.," "Hoosler Boy," "Disturber II.," "Vita II." and "Yankee" will race for the championship and prizes of $1,000 cash each and the Webb $1,000 sliver cup. The same day the 20-foot class, considered by many the most spectacular, will race, and speed as high as 40 miles an hour are promised for these boats, which are no longer than a fish pole. In the evening an illuminated boat parade will be held and an aquatic fireworks display, which it is promised will be the greatest ever held In the west.

On July 5 the 32 and 26 foot classes will be run and another parade will be held In the evening, together with fireworks. On the 6th the handicap for winners will be one of the big features, as will also the races against time by the champion. Intermingled with these principal events will be dozens of lesser races which will not be so fast, but which will be filled with spectacular features.

to visitors, and official guides will be everywhere, while an information bu reau Is to be established down town. All available camping ground has been leased in the vicinity of the city for the visiting fleets, and liun dreds are expected to camp out with in a short distance of the race course Th(*'e will be many excursion trains and dozens of large steamboats will carry crowds to the regatta city, an chorage off the race course during the events.

Statesman Born at Sea. The life story of the prime minis ter of New South Wales, the Hon James Sinclair McGowen, who arrived In London recently for the coronation is a peculiarly romantic one. He was born on the Pacific. It was in the days of sailing ships, and the West ern Bride lay becalmed. But in the hour of the future premier's birth breeze sprang up, and the babe was hailed by the crew as .an omen of good fortune, and christened after the captain, whose name was Sinclair. Mr McGowen's birth was registered at Stepney, as he was born at sea under the British flag. Here comes a strange coincidence. Mr. McGowen was never out of Australia till he left for the coronation, and the taking of the cen sus coincided with his voyage. While on the high seas his name was counted among British-born citizens, and once more the fact was recorded at Stepney.

Walked Far to Find Calf. There was an astonishing sequel a sale of a cow and her calf a days ago. At the Talycafn Mart, near Llanrwst, Wales, they were sold a Colywn Bay farmer, who disposed of the calf at the mart. The cow removed to Colwyn Bay, where was fastened up. During the night, however, she broke the chain that held her, and escaped out of the cowhouse. Next morning she was discos ered lying down by the mart door where she was separated from calf, having walked ten miles during the night.—London Answers.
