The intelligence from Europe which we pub lished yesterday contains some curious, not to say startling, announcements. It seems that the British Government has entirely changed its tactics with regard to this couutry, and that it has concluded to concede to us our in terpretation of the Monroe doctrine, even to the surrender of Canada and her West India pos sessions, and allowing, without grumbUug, the absorption of Mexico by the United States if the people desire it. Tbe British journals have also changed their tone, and are suddenly and wonderfully friendly to this country, while their correspondents In the French cap ital are equally complaisant towards tis when referring to the Mexican question. —New York Htrald. General Peck was one of the bra vest and most noted* otticeTS of General Stone wall Jackson's army. Ib-fug over six feet four inches high, and made in proportion, he rode through every fight with his famous bri gade. He was wounded at the battle of Win chester, Va., bringing up the rear. General Peck returns to his plantations in Louisiana 10-morrow, they having been restored to him by Andrew Johnson, President of the United States, and he takes with him the best wishes Of our people.— Staunton Virginian. He has just been arrested, brought back . and committed to jail. The outrage created much feeling in the county, and the fact of his arrest was kept : quiet until be wasjsafely lodged in jail, in order * to prevent lynching him.— Washington Star.
