There are men who can perpetrate a great offence simply that they may achieve notoriety by the act, and such a man seems to have been the wretched John Itlnour, who, on Sa turday, hurried himself out of existence by swallowing a dose of laudanum, at Chicago, 111. The circumstances are detailed by The TinUs as follows: " The man Illnour had been employed as a clerk in the office of Mr. 'Charles R. Vender- I cook, lime manufacturer and dealer In cement, No. 94 Monroe street. He was a native of Rome, N. V., where his family at present reside. He evinced during the trial, and also subsequently, tho keenest interest In the fate ot the two men who were executed on Friday, and ssaaned to feel something of disap.ioint ment when he saw that their names had be come so notorious. Better it seemed to him to ! fire an Epheslan dome than to go to the grave i unknown ; and so this miserable man—actu ated by no motive, stimulated by no extreme I indulgence, nerved by no object, supported by no well-grounded hope In the future—rushed j wildly from existence merely, as it appears at | present, that he might gratify tho miserable , wish to become notorious ! ; " For a number of years Illnour had boarded la company with a man named Samuel Barnes. ; To htm ho said that he had been unfortunate in j business. He had made some money at one j time, but had again lost it. He had gone to , California, and been unsuccessful there. He had begun to eomo to the conclusion that his j life w*s a mistake, when the excitement crea- | ted by the execution of Corbett and Fleming < commenced. Then came the desire for notori- | ety which resulted in his death. "" Barnes states that ho went with Illnour into his office, on Monroe street, on Saturday afternoon. Illnour had frequently expressed to him his wish to die, and when the two con victs were executed on Friday, he earnestly and seriously expressed a wish that he could j • swap places with them.' He then procured a ! phial of laudanum, and, in Barnes's presence, j drank it nearly out. Barnes, his old friend, sprang toward him when he drank, and snatch ed the phial from his hand. But he had im bibed a sufficient quantity to insure his speedy death ; and, after swallowing it, coolly walked j to the I-um House, No. SS Monroe street, and ! sat reading the papers while the poison was \ effecting'!ts work. "Soon after the fatal draught, Barnes and j Mr. Briggs, the proprietor of the place, j brought three doctors to see him. He acknow ledged to them all that he had taken the poi son, but would not look at any medicines they could offer in the shape of antidotes. He wished to die. lie said, and he was determined that he would not live. He had taken the poison with perfect deliberation. He had a ; rope fastened up in his office, which he had in- \ tended should be the means through which he should escape the torments of this world. He s>at and read the newspapers with perfect equanimity and coolness till the sickness of death began, and then he requested to be as sisted to his room. He was conveyed to room No. 19, and there, in a short time, expired. 44 The deceased was fifty-seven years of age ; his family are all wealthy, and there can be assigned no cause for the suicide but the j gloomy and morbid thoughts which had arisen ] during his misfortunes, acting npon a natural j weak temperament, instigated him to the com- j mission of this crime, for which he alone has j had to pay the penalty." Negro Riot ib Philadelpbia.—Another j disturbance about the blacks, which, for a ] time, threatened to result in bloodshed, occur- j red yesterday morning in the neighborhood of ; St. Mary and Seventh streets. It seems that some colored men, very much under the in fluence of bad whisky, were amusing them selves by tiring guns from the second story of a house in this locality. The jiolice remon strated, and finally went into the house and seized the muskets. A large crowd of half drunken blacks gathered around, and, becom ing very riotous iii their conduct, the officers attempted to arrest one or two. The prison ers, as fast as taken into custody, were res- I cued. Additional police force was sent to the j neighborhood by Lieutenants Golde3* and ; Paulliu, both of whom arrived in person and j did much towards preventing a riot. The i blacks increased hy hundreds, and a large number of whites arrived on the ground. A j collision between the two classes was almost I inevitable, and would certainly have resulted bnt for the timely arrival of the police.
