| Choose Tobacco Plant Beds With Care, VPI ‘Advises ! Tobacco plant bed location is | important. VPI Agricultural Extension Service specialists say tobacco farmers in blackshank areas i should make a new plant bed site each spring. Choose a south ! eastern exposu re with well-drain I ed lam.. and plenty of disease | free water available. Spring or well water is safe if the spring ' has not received drainage water from a blackshank infested field. The plant bed site should be | well protected from the wind. Light to sandy soil, rich in or ganic matter, is preferred since it is more easily worked, less in clined to be cloddy. Ciusts less af ter rains, and warms up more quickly in the spring. Remove all trash and crop residue on the area surrounding the bed. Work up and pulverize the soil thor oughly to a depth of 4 to 6 inches. If sod land must be used, it should be broken up two or three months before sowing the seed so all plant refuse will be well rotted. Such plant beds should be disked or harrowed at frequent intervals so a firmer bed will be available on the propel seeding uatc.
