Ask Landowners' Cooperation Two Scientists Will Make Soil Map Cumberland Development Program

In connection with the Rural De m i. i.iiK-nt ])i>. mm if Cumberland county the various Federal and Hiau agricultural agencies repre ■ i med :n the county have embarked on an effort to measure the soil and land resources, and determine the long range conservation needs of the county Before the effort is completed most of the workers of the various agricultural agencies in the county as well as two Soil Con servation Service soil scientists will participate. Several weeks ago the group met . Cumberland courthouse and pre pared a generalized soil type map of the county At -tins time the county was divided into five sec • ■'ms based on soil types and types of farming. The map was sent to tin statistical department of Cornell University where an electronic 111a chine drew forty 100 acre samples representing each of the five sec tions These 100 acre blocks were outlined on aerial photographs with out regard to ownership or land use and were returned to the county. The two soil scientists. Robert Updike of Rustburg. and Charles Judy of Fincastle, are now' engaged in making detailed soil maps of the 100 acre blocks. These maps will show soil types, severity of erosion, steepness of slope and land use. When this mapping is completed, the acreages will be totaled and ex panded to represent the total acre age of the county. Specialists at Cornell University

Club Federation Meets In Goochland Wednesday, April 17 District 10 of the Virginia Federa tion of Home Demonstration Clubs meets in Goochland on April 17. be ginning at 10 a.m. Home demonstration ciud mem bers from the following counties will be attending: Cumberland Bucking ham. Louisa. Greene. Albemarle, Fluvanna. Goochland and Orange. Miss .Jo Ann Smith. International Farm Youth Exchange Student to Sweden in 1950. will recall some of her experiences IJev. A Purcell Bailey, pastor of Centenaiy Methodist Church. Rich mond. will speak on "The Challenge for Today's Homemaker." Other features of the program will he the presenting of “Pennies for Friendship" from the counties and reports from the counties of out handing work done during the year Each county will have an exhibit on some phase of the state federa tion program. Cumberland's exhibit will be on the loan funds available for students entering college to study home economics and for girls I entering nursing school. Mrs. Ruth L. Gamage. Cumber land countv. and past president of District Hi. will speak on “Scholar ships Available from the Federation of Home Demonstration Clubs.”

say this method will give a 90 per cent accurate tabulation ol' the acre es of the various soil types, land capability classes, and acres of land devoted to the various land uses in the county. This information will be available to the agricultural workers in the county and they in turn, using their knowledge of trends in the county, will prepare estimates of the con servation resource needs of the county for a period of the next ten j years. The soil mappers working in the county will not. be able to contact the land owners in most cases since they will not know who owns the land, and one block may include part of two or three farms. They emphasize the fact that finding the land owners would take more time than doing the job of mapping. They ask the cooperation of the land owners to allow them to go over the land if a block or part of a block should lull on their farms. Both soil men are employed by the Soil Conservation Service. Up dike is a recent graduate of VPI. Charles -Judy is area soil scientist for the Soil Conservation Service, and lias worked in Cumberland county at various times for well over ten years.

Mrs. Annie Gilliam Dies in Andersom ille Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon for Mrs Annie E. Gilliam. 82, who died . Monday at her home in Ander son.ville. Burial was in Bethel Methodist church cemetery She was the widow of Ayres S. Gilliam. Surviving are a daugh ter, Mrs. Rodney C Smith of Andersonville, a sister, Mrs. W. A. Allen, of Amelia county, and a granddaughter.
