Croup Requests 10 Per Ceni Increased Virginia Corn Production In 10,>‘5 Coals

Virginia farmers are asked by ihu U. S. Department of Agricul ture to increase then 195'.; corn production by about 40 per cent over the short 1952 crop The department also recom mended • through its State Agri cultural Mobilization Committee <AMC> that ihe pioduction of tame hay, soybeans, sweet pota toes, and certain spting vegeta bles be boosted. A decrease is sought in the pioduction of \vheat. already seeded, in white potatoes, oats, and cotton, ac cording to C. D. Corn Yield In Tidewater Virginia, where corn is an important commercial crop. Mr. Jordan said that yields can be improved somewhat under normal growing conditions. Also, he said that more acreage can be put into corn where the labor or mechanical handling facilities < \ist. In the remainder of the State, where there is somewhat a scarcity of farm labor, he rec ommended that farmers concen trate on increasing corn yields lather than acreage.
