Civil War Coffin Found In Funeral Home Inventory

Change in nil things - even death seems to he the Hotly of progress. This thought was impressed re eently on J T. Doyne. Jr., and Jluhei i Burger, funeral directors of Dovne Funeral Home in Flvrm villt- During an inventory, Mr. Doyne discovered a three-loot in fant metal .coffin, manufactured by Fisk Coffin Company, Spring field. Ohio. This casket, which is rare and unusual, was purchased by Mr. Doyne's grandfather. W T. Doyne. shortly after the Civil War. "It is the same type of cjtffin that Abraham imcoln was buried in Mr. Doyne said The infant cofi.n is msdje in two pieces, molded about the exact shape of the body. It is hand cast of cast iron and painted to look lik' wood -the material most gen erally used for coffins during the time that this one was made. It is joined together by brass screws.

At the time that this type was used, the coffins were sealed to gether with white lead to make them waterproof. There is a slid ing panel on the upper half, which covers a glass panel, through which the b Jy might be viewed The coffin weights about 75 pounds ‘This was a rarely-used item in those days," Mr. Doyne explain ed It was so expensive, few people could afford them. Wood was the material used by cabinet makers to make coffins. The price of the coffin depended on the kind of wv od that was used." Mr. Doyne's grandfather pur chased the coffin when the Farm ville funeral home was located in tlie Doyne Building on Main Street It was an odd size and expensive, so it Was pushed to the back in the inventory. When the funeral home was moved to its present location on Venable Street. Mr Doyne said
