Funds Campaign Begins For Recreation Field

To see the clearing next to the school grow, acre by acre, and al most overnight, one would be in clined to mumble something about "magic, gremlins, etc." But after e'-ine the pair of bulldozers double team on a pile of trees and dirt it is apparent that it isn't magic but just plain hard work This i; just the first step in the proposed $10,000 lighted all-purpose athletic field. The most important phase is underway now in a vigor ous, campaign to raise the necessary money to properly equip the field. The movement tu get Ihe much needed athletic field for the high school and community use was spearheaded by the Buckingham County Raritan Club. John C. Spencer, president of the Buckingham County Athletic As sociation said a county-wide report progress meeting will be held at the high school Tuesday evening, April 16 at 7:110 p.m. He describes the proposed fa cilities as having a lighted football field and baseball diamond, tennis ] courts and plenty of room. John C Morgan is secretary-treas mer. Vice-presidents represent the various magisterial districts in the county and they will organize the fund drives in their districts. They

HI) C lub Members Plan Tour Of Homes A tour of homes will highlight National Home Demonstration We k April 28-Ma> 4 in Buck ingham county. The homes tour will be held on April JO. New and remodeled homes will be included in the tour, said Mrs. Virginia Bailey, home agent. Homes to be includ ed on the tour will be announced soon by an appointed committee, site said. Persons interested in going on the tour are asked to meet at the courthouse at 9:45 a. tn. with a box lunch. Virginia has supplied six first ladies- Martha Washington, Martha Jefferson. Rachel Jackson. Letitia Tyler, Ellen Arthur and Edith Wil son.

Buckingham Bang's Tests Favorable County Agent Says About. 1200 to 1500 head of cattle in Buckingham county have been tested so far in the county's drive to become Brucellosis free R. S. Ellis, county agent, said that about one-ha if of the farms have been tested, but have been mostly smaller cattle farms. Only two reports have shown any symptoms of the bane's di sease so far. lie said. "The county seems to be in good shape." he explained. The campaign is handled by Dr. Way land D. The testing of the smaller herds should be completed this week and then they will move into the large herds. Ellis said. Central Student Among Finalists In Virginia Science Talent Search

Albert Baber, uf Buckingham Cen tral High School, is one of the fina lists hi the Virginia Science Talent Search. A total of 172 seniors from the high schools in Virginia entered this contest From this number have come 40 finalists, and from these the 15 winners will be chosen at the Virginia Academy os Science meet ing in May. Albert Baber took a science apti tude examination and wrote a report cn "My Scientific Project" These, plus scholastic records atnl-a report on extracurricular activities, formed the basis for determining the finan lists. Not only is Baber an excellent student, but he. is copy editor of the school annual, reporter for the Science club. Beta Club treasurer, and a member of the basket ball and baseball teams. Buddy Pankey received second place ribbon on one of his Angus steers He later sold the steer for 30 cents per pound. His second steel brought 21 I cents per pound. David Seay got a third place prize for his pen of three hogs, and they were graded as U. S. number one He sold them at IK 75 cents per pound. David Seay also sold a steer at 23 cents and Larry Derrenbackei j got 26.5" for his.
