The Founders, in a new woodland theater at Williamsburg on afternoons-beginning May 13. On evenings beginning June 26. his hit play. The Common Glory, will enter its e!<-\ euth season at Matoaka Lake Amphitheater. The National Park Service will open to traffic early nex year the extension of the scenic, three-lane Ccionial Parkway that will connect Jamestown with Williamsburg and Yoiktown. The modern glass indus try and the Park Service have com pleted reconstruction of the Glass house of 1608. Vases, pitchers and other glass manufactures were blown and shaped in this early fac tory during a trial run in November. Colonial Williamsburg. Inc the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities, and govern mental agencies such as the De partment of Defense and State Highway Commission are well along in collaborative preparations. To their helpful efforts must be added the substantial contribution of the British government announced last April—an elaborate exhibition being designed in London for Jamestown Festival Park. New port News, Hampton and Warwick are developing a week-long program of entertainment that will give the visitors a bird’s-eye view of Ameri can life. At least six events are planned for the Richmond celebration. These will culminate in a ceremony com memorating the landing of the colo nists at the fall line of the present site of the C'-f on Whitsunday in 161)7. On June 1 will be re-enacted in St. John's Church the Convention of 1775. where Patrick Henry de livered his "Give me libtrty or give me death! ’ speech. Petersburg, will present a pageant. Cradle of the Cockade, on June 12 at the National Military Park dur ing the city's Homocoming Week Virginia Beach will repeat and en large many of the events of its fiftieth anniversary celebration in 1956. , The nine schools of higher edu cation which will participate in the Festival year are Madison College, Randolph-Macon at Ashland, Rich mond Professional Institute, South ern Seminary, Sweet Briar College, Virginia State College, Washington and Let University, the College of William and Mary, and the Uni versity of Virginia. Other institu tions may have programs which have not yet been announced. •'Colleges and Universities In general, the participation of these institutions will involve all or ■i part of tht following activities: magazine issues on seventeenth century subjects, lectures and ex hibits on the culture of the coloni zation period, plays by dramatic so cietes. musical recitals and con certs, special commemorative days, and where possible, publications dedicated to the anniversary year. The College ol' William and Mary at Williamsburg is perhaps closest to the celebration geographically and traditionally. Its participation ’n Jamestown's anniversaries dates hack to at least to 11107. In the new Phi Pet a Kappa Memorial Hall, it will offer concerts by artists like Richard Dyer Bennett, the balladist. and drama by the William and Mary Players On October 23-25 the College will present a pageant on its history in the new Hall. Of the counties which have form ed Festival committees. 15 have worked sufficiently far in advance to be able to present definite pro grams at this time. Charles City County, home of the famous James River plantations and next-door neighbor to Jamestown, began to raise funds for participation during it Autumn Plantation Pilgrimage more than a year ago. With these funds, the county began to refurbish an old jail as a museum and infor mation center for the guidance of visitors. Other counties also arc setting up information centers. Drama on Patrick Henry Hanover County, which has an unusually full program, will present as a part of it a historical drama on Patrick Henry, its most dis tinguished son. This will open at the Barksdale Memorial Theatre, at Hanover County Courthouse, o n May 30, and will be given on Thurs day. Friday and Saturday nights through July 6. Isle of Wight County
