Some Food For Thought When preachers and prophets in days of old Did their preaching under a tree, They taught more religion, or so I am told Than is taught to you and me. It is not a fine house built over our head That will prepare Johnny Jones for life, But what, and how it is taught instead That will fit him for this world of strife. If instead of lectures on atoms and stars He is taught the essentials of living, He will find it more useful to know his 3 R’s Than receive what our savants are giving. It’s a knowledge of basics, that Johnny will need, And how to work with his hands Not arts or isms before he can read , Or fundamentals understand. There are thousands of Joiinnys to one Einstein And millions who have to eat, Tho’ we appreciate polish as a decent shoe shine, We should first have shoes on our feet. D. L. M.
