Beamer says to select a welldrained plot as close as possible to your house. Plow as soon as the ground will permit—it should be done by April 1.
Buy disease-resistant \arieties, and balance the leafy and root vegetables. Fertilize with 5-10-5 or 4-12-4 at the rate of 25 to 30 pounds per 1,000 square ifeet, either before planting or at planting time. Be sure the fertilizer is well mixed with the soil before seeding.
It might be well to stock up now on materials to control disease and insects. You’ll need a rotenone-copper mixture for general control of both insects and diseases; a copper-DDT mixture for potato insects; sabadilla dust for harlequin bug, sqoash bug, and green stink bug, and nicotine sulphate for aphids.
