Gerritt Smith has finally commenced his li bel suit against the Chicago Tribune, laying his damages at fifty thousand dollars. The suit is entered in the United States Circuit Court, be fore Judge Drummond. Mr. Smith was will ing to forego the judicial proceedings if the Tribune would publish a retraction dictated by himself. This the Tribune refused to do, pre ferring to fight it out in the courts.
