A SECOND PARTY AT LAST
Years ago the Democratic party proudly claimed to be the party that represented the will and wishes of the majority. They were the party of the people, and disdainfully pointed to the Republicans as representing privileged minorities. But Franklin Roosevelt realized the potential of organized minorities and in his maniacal fight for power pitted class against class, employee against employer and race against race. Out of these clashes militant organizations arose and Franklin Roosevelt took them to his side. The Democratic party thenceforth represented not the people, but the high stepping bosses of strong pressure groups.
When Robert Taft died and control of the Republican Party passed to the Dewey-Brownell fashion, the Republicans ceased to stand for anything. Principal died. The sole cohesive force of this branch of disorganized politicians was the desire to get back in where the gravy was thick after years of being out in the cold. The Republicans decided to “take on” the progressive, liberal cloak that had offered such success to the Democrats. Meanwhile they hitched their star to a high flying general. Now all they have is ^ Eisenhower and some trained monkeys who cry “Me Too” to the Democrats and try to look as much like New Dealers as possible.
The real sufferer has been the voter. For years he has, had nothing to vote for. Two parties, different in name only offered him no satisfaction. While pressure groups plied ' their trade, he would cancel out the vote of a neighbor whose views were similar to his. As T Coleman Andrews said, millions of citizens “now stand abandoned and disenfranchised by both parties..” These people want a place to go November 6, and something to vote for that they believe in, and they are entitled to that as a matter of right” Actually as it now is we have but a one party system.
We are happy to see T. Coleman Andrews-has qualified to be on the presidential ballot in Virginia this fall. The Memphis Conference did not produce a second party, probably because many of the delegates felt if their present efforts proved abhortive, they could quietly slide back into their old womout Democratic-Republican robes. A large vote in favor of T. Coleman Andrews would prove conclusively that we once more want a two party system in this - country and an opportunity to vote, not against, but for a candidate.
