It all begins with the soil By Stbphkn Dakkinu Raopahiuinock Nwws Staff Wrtfewr“The c&nate crisis is so Ittft and so btg, that if no corrections are mads by iOHi. it will bo too fate,."* sad Dr. Timothy LaiSalle - CEO of the Rodalc institute - speaking m front of TO concerned county residents at The Link on Sunday at the annual Rappahannock County Conservation Alliance iRCCA) meeting. The Rodaie Institute is a nonprofit research and education tarm specializing in urganic production located ui Kutztown. Pa. LaSalle has advised former \ ice President Ai tk>re amt Sen. John McCain on the link between agriculture and giobiii w;irmins. LaSalle presented his case to the group that agriculture is a*, the core of reversing ami recovering from global warming. The big “wedge-*, is he calls tfe — its tn a pie chart of all potential solutions — is not simply reducing carbon emissions i although that is crttical) but to “sequester* carbon in the soil where it can be used by natural processes to strengthen the soil structure, enrich it and make it healthier This process is facilitated by a naturally occurring tungi - called Mycvrrhizal tungi - which uses carbon to slow down organic decay. Fertilisers and chemicals destroy the fungi. Declining,, overused and mis managed soil resources an* partly responsible for the global climate crisis. he said. ami there is ahieeiitting opportunity" to "dean up our act" and "pull this out" before eeufogteal disaster strtkes. The opportunity is moving agrh culture from single crop over production - what he terms "monoculture" forming - to multi-use, crop rotated organic forming, and it all begins with the soil. The key to healthier soil is organic forming methods which spurn chemical fertilisers and additives in fovor of fostering healthier microbiology function in the sod. Soils that are managed organically convert greenhouse gases into useful carbon that is retained ui the soil for many years. It is not only the actual process of rev iving soil health that is important. but the entire chain of food production and consumption. said See SOIL. Staff Sgt. SOIL From Page A1 LaSalle. and Rappahannock County is one of the few com* mum ties leading the way Ppoplo have to consider every step, said LaSalle, from rwiucing the mmiber of times a tractor needs to transit a field - to till, to plant, to fertilize. to harvest — to how feud is processed, packaged and transported to stores. AH of these activities have a “ear* bon footpruit.“ each step of which uses energy and fiiel thus creating more emissions. he said. Local tiimiers are begin* ning to integrate more organ* ic processes, but consumers need to play a very active role m demanding how their food is produced and delivered. said LaSalle, This is already happening in Rappahannock, with formto-tuble programs, comm unity supported agriculture, and consumer consciousness drrven by organizations such as RCCA and local media — Flavor magazine was begun this summer in Sperryville to highlight and promote the local food movement. The Rodale Institute was also organized to help teach formers how to sustainably and profitably hum organ!' cally, and LaSalle said the institute has courses avail' able on its Web site at www.rodaleinstitute.org. However, overcoming the destructive effects of targe scale corporate agriculture will require more than small communities creating their own little eco-econumies. One of the ways to bring about swifter change, said LaSalle, would be through governtnent awarding organic tanners with “carbon credits."- in essence paying farmers for drawing more carbon from the atmosphere into the soil. But LaSalle also acknowledges that this requires political will, and that going up against corporate agriculture will require getting his message to Congress and the White House. Convincing Congress to spend more money at a time of huge bailouts and economic stimulus plans - in addition to the huge debt the country already has - will be difficult. However. LaSalle believes the carbon credit idea would pay for itself by reducing crop insurance (organic crops are more drought resistant) and reducing health costs. “Obesity and malnourish nwnt occur snmultunwusty in our society."* said LaSalle. Fruits and vegetables formed conventionally — meaning with chemical soil additives and non-rotation — today have nO percent of the nutritional value those same produce had in the 1940s. Rappahannock County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Bob Chappell has incorporated the ‘buy fresh, buy local” philosophy into the RCPS food services and said. ”lt just makes sense.” we can get local fotni at a competitive price.” and help the local economy while providing nutritional school lunches, “why wouldn't we do it?.” said Dr Chappell. Audit Bureau ot Circulations vmMarappneus.com THURSDAY, NOV 113, 2008 My; I '.i Jt Negative energy tudents running for class offices and student council seats have taken lessons from the recently concluded presidential campaigns, according to a wire story that made the rounds last week. Let’s hope they are shaping their pitches and their behavior after the right model. Republicans already are deep into their soulsearching after last week's drubbing in the presidential contest and after significant setbacks on Capitol Hill. The brand, one prominent local GOP loyalist told us in the run-up to the election, is damaged beyond immediate repair. Conservative columnists are now cranking out hand-wringing copy about how the party has run out of ideas. The primary reason for the Republican embarrassment is far simpler and easily corrected: John McCain and Sarah Palin ran an abysmal campaign. It is now abundantly clear that the American people have absolutely had it with negative campaigning, which is all that McCain and Palin had to offer as Nov. 4 approached. Campaigning on what they would do for America and Americans — in all four debates, in all the hundreds of rallies and campaign appearances, in all of the aired ads — was virtually non-existent. Seemingly, all they had to talk about was Obama — the risks, the radicals, the ramifications. Without question, McCain and Palin had something to offer the American people. You'd never know it from their public presentations. We are sick to death of negative campaigning. Certainly, they were not guiltless, but the Democrats understood this far better than the Republicans. The GOP isn't out of fresh ideas, but the two principal candidates bypassed nearly every opportunity to express them in favor of attacking their opponent. We'd love to see the Commission on Presidential Debates come up with some new guidelines for the future: That debates will, in fact, be town hall meetings, where the candidates face questions directly from the voters. And the moderator has only one critical function: To turn off a candidate's microphone as soon as he or she begins to drift from a discussion of personal and party aspirations and starts in on the opponent's shortfalls. We don't want to hear about what an idiot your opponent is. We want to hear how smart you are. John McCain and Sarah Palin didn’t get that. If their party in general doesn't come to some understanding, either, the GOP will be sitting on the sidelines for many elections to come. S ‘Blaming sports for poor attendance in church on Sunday mornings isn’t the problem’ I am wry disappointed in Larry Olivers Letter to the Editor about sports iNov. 6 edition. Rappahannock News*. The issue that l believe Larry is raisin# has to do with games that are played and scheduled on Sunday mornings. The Anussville United Methodist minister had approached me on this subject last week, directly pertaining to baseball activities I informed him that the only games that are played on Sunday mornings are tournament games scheduled by the state. Also, that if a parent did not want their child to play on Sunday morning then that would be up to the parent. No one. in the league, makes these' kids plav on toonm* • ment teams: that is a parent/child's choice. Normally a tournament team is made up of 12-15 players. It only takes nine player* to field a team fur any single baseball game. Any one of the parents/children can choose to miss a morning game and come to the later game. Attain, it is their choice. Blaming sports for poor attendance in church on Sunday mornings isn't the problem The problem may he within the church itself or the person doing the preaching. Sports and physical activity are what is missing most in tKis country. With a growing number of children having childhood diabetes and obesity. I would think that the more physical activity a child receives, the better it would be Not saying that church is not the place to be on Sunday morning, because it should be. But again, it is the parents' responsibility, not an organlied athletic group, to do what they think is best for their children. Amy Hitt Amiasville Full citizenship Local author James D. Russell holds a copy of the Rappahannock News declaring Sen. Barack Obama the President-elect. Russell grew up in Rappahannock County and heard plantation stories from his grandmother who was a former slave. Russell sees a new era and says we are on a “venture into unexplored realms of democracy.’* Rappahannock Naws Staff Photo/Stephan Qarwng Letters Reason why reader ‘chose to vote* carrying Bible, handgun On election day, t tried to call attention to a particular remark attributed to now President-elect Barack Obama, Mr. Obama was reported to have explained that small-town resi- ■ dents in economically depressed areas tended to 'ding to guns or religion or antipathy toward people who aren't like them....' So I chose to vote while carrying my Bible and openly carrying a handgun properly secured in a 'drop-leg' holster. I explained this to Terry Dixon and to the gentleman who took the photograph of me used in the Nov. 6 Rappahannock News. However, the paper did not include my explanation. The omission of my explanation was. in my view, made worse b* the wording of the accompany Lux article—where my actions were discussed in combination with remarks of a voter reportedly fearful of a black presidency. All-in-all. I believe this was poor/slanted journalism with a liberal elitist view of'us' like that attributed to Mr. Obama. So how much attention should be paid to Mr. Obama’s remark? Is it just condescending? Does it reflect a more hardened liberal/left-wing view than the wording of his upbeut campaign ads? Clinging to guns and religion—would they have us give each up? Before election day. the only time l had worn a gun was during weapons training in preparation for spending two months with our soldiers in Afghanistan. But I have been a Virginia deer hunter for about 40 years, t don’t look to make an issue of Virginia's open carry law, or gun ownership in general—but I intend to keep my firearms. Alter the election, 1 was moved by the emotion of so many Americans now that America had finally taken one giant step away from the racism of its past. I am hopeful that President-elect Obama, once in office, will take a more centrist than leftist view. I have prayed that he may ask for and discern God's will in the decisions he faces. And l have prayed that God will keep him sale. 1 hope that Mr. Obama would not mind that exercise of my religion. Bill Boelte Sperryville i applaud the Rappahannock News' coverage of election night’ I am writing to applaud the Rappahannock News' coverage of election night in Rappahannock County and. specifically, Steve Dareing's front page article. I felt he provided a really interesting cross-section of political goings on in the county in both his writing and his photographs. Jim Miller's comment quoted in the article was of particular inter- ‘ est. He said that he was grateful that Rappahannock County went tor McCain. While l find that unfortunate, as a supporter of President-elect Obama, t am grateful and find it tar more significant that the Commonwealth of Virginia, the former seat of the Confederacy, went tor Obama. That combined with Obama winning another commonwealth. Pennsylvania, arguably spelled the beginning of the end tor McCain. The final tally of electoral votes yminus Missouri*. 365 to 163 la more than 2 to 1 markin', signifies a repudiation of the Republican Party, and, especially, its rightwing. I applaud the right-wing* uewtbund support tor Sarah Palin and their hope to secure her a place in the party's leadership or at the top of its ticket in 2012, If they are successful, a big “if” they will succeed in taking their party from repudiation to irrelevance. Adams Jeanne Drevas Nancy Keyset Kathy Pousk Respect yourself, the animal and the landowner’ when hunting TTunting season is hers XJLigmn. And I say. '‘Oh nor'this is a very anxious time. For you have to have a hawk's eye and quick steps in times of unexpected behavior with many irresponsible hunters. I grew up with a deeprooted hunting background, as l was trained by my hither. George Beahn. who was a highly skilled big game hunter, t have many good memories and some not so good. Both sides have helped me to be the person 1 am now. I have a lot of respect tor the landowner who sets his or her boundaries as who can and cannot hunt. For they are the keeper of the land, the taxpayer and they have a lot of responsibility. And they are often misunderstood. Make no mistake. I am a “no* person! Not because l am against hunting, but because of the disrespect I've seen toward the animals and the land through the years. Many talk the talk but don't walk the walk. So IF you are honored by someone letting you hunt, respect yourself the animal and the landowner. Don't ask to bring other people. Remember its an honor tor you. Know where you are shooting, especially if there are homes and livestock around. Don't take more than your limit and leave the alcohol at home tor your safety and others. Bless the animal, and say thank you tor the meat. Safe hunting.
