Proposed, Auto Insurance Fund
Of interest to most of us is the Virginia Advisory Legislative Council’s recommendation, made known this week, that a special automobile insurance fund be created to protect accident victims against non-insured drivers. The council suggests that the general assembly pass a law charging every motorist $10.00 per year if he does not have liability insurance. To this, it says, should be added a charge on insurance companies of 1 ,/->'A of their premium collections. From the two sources a fund would be built up for accident, and hit and run victimsIf
a driver, under the suggested bill, were in an accident and the other man were 1. at fault,-2. without insurance, and 3. judgement proof, then the fund would be available on the basis of up to $10,000 per person, with a. $20,000 limitation. There would also be up to $5,000 available for property damage.
The uninsured driver-at-fault, although judgement proof, would lose his license forever, unless he repaid the fund in full with 4% nterest.
