. The Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company of Virginia announced today that it is planing to re-hirei a number of worken who were laid off earlier in the year because of declining business. Now, as a result of general improvement of conditions in the hpsintps, some 50 of these employees will be offered re-employ? ment. Re-hiring will take place lotRichmond, Roanoke, Norfolk, Petersburg, 'Lynchburg, Fairlax. Newport News and Hampton.
John R. Brown, Sperryville Manager, stated, “The downward, trend in the demand for telephone service that prompted the March layoffs began in July, 1957. The, Company subsequently undertook an aggressive merchandising program which has brought abotit a: gratifying change• in overall results. The net increase in telephones obtained tn July of this year, for example, exceeded that for the same month in' 1957.” He further stated, “All indicationspoint to a continuing improved situation with respect to the public’s need for telephone services in the months ahead.” ^

Mrs. Arvelon Jordan Roberts, 23 year old Negro woman of Flint Hill, died in Warren, Memorial Hospital late Friday evening, as the r^suk^of burns she received Friday morning when a can of fuel oil exploded as she was pouring oil into a stove.. * i - „t as being in fair endition at Warren * A son Roger Jr., age 3, is listed Memorial Hospitpl with buras suffered ar the same time. - ’
A Flint Hill Fire Department official said that when firemen arrived at the scene, rs. Roberts was lying outside in the yard. She was rushed to'the hospital by the Flint H ill rescue Jsquaid where she died several- hpurs later.
