Storm Clouds Halt
Country Music Show
Less than an hour before the finals were due to start Sunday evening, the Warrenton Jaycees’ National Championship Country Music Contest was halted by threatening storm clouds.
With a record-breaking 210 contestants and some 5,000 fans on the Lake Whipporwill grounds, the Jaycees announced that the contest would be continued next Sunday, starting at 2 p.m. The remaining 40 contestants will play and the semi-finals and finals will be run off.
Admission will be free for all persons attending last Sunday who present their tickets at he gate.
I was the biggest of the 11 contests staged by the young Warrenton businessmen. Contestants came from Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, West Virginia and the District, and some 5,000 hardy fans brought blankets, camp chairs and picnic baskets and settled down under the trees on the hillside to enjoy the performances.
Lake Whippoorwill is located three miles off Rt. 29-211 just east of Warrenton. Until the first week end in August it is sunk deep in country peacefullness, and even then, except for the Country Music signs on the Baldwin’s Ridge Road, the passer-by would never guess the spirited and colorful drama being played just over the hill.
