Her mother passed away when she was two years old and two years later, her father married Shirley Hawkins Hitt of Castletun. Misty was reused hy her grandparents. Clifton and Jlme Clark, who delivered the WuodviUe mail three days a week. At that time, they shared the route with Weldon Burke, who with his wife. Lbnie. ran a country store in WuodviUe. where RlueRidgeMac is today Many times when Misty rode with her grandparents to deliver mail, they would also deliver groceries to help out neighbors on the route. MistyV great aunt. Ruth R Orange, became the Acting Ftostmaster of WuodvUle in 1965 (1966-1997). She liked to be called “postmistress” In a recent interview. Misty recalled spending many days at the post office (which was rented at the time) with her grandma and great aunt. In those days, the Wbodville post office was a community gathering place with a sofa and furniture, she said. The building had no running water and was heated by an old coal stove. Fblks could sit and visit when they picked up their general delivery mail. There were about 20 general delivery customers because there were no post office boxes. It was free. The families who lived frirther away had their mail delivered to them. After the death of Ruth s husband, the poor conditions - soot build-up, no running water and no one to help keep the place warm. - made the move of the post office to 4616 Sperryville Pike, which was Ruth's home, a necessity. Misty remembers that they were not allowed to have ftimiture in the new post office lobby. She said that she thought community closeness was lost when they “took the sofa out of the post office.” Kuth Orange continued as “postmistress" while Misty attended public school in the county. She graduated from Rappahannock high school in 1961 and worked on the family farm until she was 22 years old. In November 1966. Misty started delivering mail as a contractor, as Woodville had stopped being an official post office in 1966 and was a contract station. “There weren't that many jobs available in Rappahnnnock Countv when 1 started," she recalled. “My grandmother became very ill and t needed a job close to home. It was convenient." Everyone, including the postmaster, worked as an independent contractor. They did not receive any benefits. She delivered about two feet of mail per day. There were no mail cases to sort mail. Her mail was sorted on table's and shelves. “My route was 60 miles every day with commuting, and never more than 10 miles away from home," Misty recalled, explaining that a postal route often travels in a circular pattern around a town with some retracing of tracks. “My first truck was a 2wheel drive. My next two were 4-wheel drives. They were all Eord Rangers. All of them went over 200,000 miles" One of the difficulties of Misty’s contracted mute was that she could never get time off, she said.
