Alfalfa Weevil were found in four out of eight Alfalfa fields in* spected in Rappahannock last week. In every case the larvae were found on the protected or southeastern .slopes and were yet quite small. Growers are advised to be keenly on the alert as this insect is expected to begin its onslaught any day now
Dr. J. G. Rowell, entomologist of V. P. I., says insecticide should be applied as soon as most of the alfalfa plant tops show injury. A single, properly timed spray should control the alfalfa weevil.
Rappahannock Sup pi y has stocked emulsified Heptachlor which is the only insecticide for controlling the insect that hes been approved by' the Pure Food and Drug people. One fourth pound per acre being the application rate.
Mutt Clatterbuck of Flint Hill has agreed to do custom spraying with his low-pressure, low gallonage boom sprayer which type Rowell states is ideal for weevil control.
