Richmond was 34c for Grade A Large; Roanoke and Harrisonburg 30-32c. In the larger U S. outlook, the egg-type chick hatch gives some encouragement with 25% fewer chicks than last year this time..Virginia dropped 14%. It's still not too late to consider putting in some layers for fall production if it suits you.
With hot weather coming on, it’s a good time to remember that quality is a big price factor in eggs ahd summer calls for extra special care.
TURKEYS
Turkey producers have made a move that may head off disaster prices next fall and winter.
January, while it’s a light eggset month, showed a 43 % increase over last January. But by April always the peak in egg-sets producers had shaved the margn over last year to 3 %. Some eggs were even going to breakers at a big loss.
We’re still well above a year ago, the accumulated total of January through March show's about 12% more turkeys, but April figures will trim that a little. June is the last big month in hatch.
