Announced An examination for Rural Carrier for the post office at Sperryville, Va.. will be open for acceptance of applications until August 13, 1957, the Commission announced today. Applicants for this examination T'uift actually reside within the delivery of the above-mentioned post office and must have so resided for one year next preceding the closing date for acceptance of applications. They must have reached their 18th birthday on the closing date. There is no maximum age limit. However, persons who have passed the age of 70 may, be considered only for temporary renewable appointments of one year. Complete information about the examination requirements and instructions for filing applications may be obtained at the post office for which this examination is being announced. Application forms must be filed with the U. S. Civil Service Commission, Washington 25. D. C. and must be received or postpiarked not later than the closing date. These will include old bills of sale, original land grants, deeds, etc. The uniciue map display includes conies of some of the most imnorrant colonial maps, starting with that of Captaii* John Smith’s printed in 1612. This is a rare educational opportunity for the children and adults of the county. There is no charge for this exhibit. While the. total number of cases in j 1957 is below the total for the coriresponding week in 1956. the number should be lower if there is to be a drop well below 1956. Two of the cases reported this week arjc in one family and two in another!; one of the four received two doses! of Salk vaccine and is non-paralytic, the others had no vaccine a|nd are paralytic. A patient previously reported in one of these fam|lies has just died of bulbar polio. The age group 0-4 shows the highest incidence with 13 cjases reported. In the 5-9 group there are 5 cases, 10-14 and 15-19 jhave 2 cases each, and in the group above 20 years there are 4 cases.) No cases that have leceived three doses of Salk vaccine have been reported paralytic in Virginia this year. There is still time for those who have not had t ie vaccne to be given two doses before the peak of thq polio se;son is, reached, if it occurs at the same time as last year. The State Department of Health urges all between ages under 1 and 40 years to get two doses of Salk yaccine as promptly as possible. Chiefs Lose To Indians, 10-8 The Rappahannock Chiefs lost to Shenandoah Indians on Sunday at Moffett’s Field with a scoe of 10 to 8. Luck deserted the Chiefs at) the beginning of the 8th. As the owners have been gracious enough to open their homes so that we may get a glimpse into our counr's history during Colonial times it behooves all of us to take advantage of their generous efforts, and at the same time give ourselves the benefit of three highly enjoyable days. Hint Hill area— Hillsooro , h'i;!r 1730. home of Col. Earl E. Holmes. During the colonial period "Hillsboro” was a thriving community with mill, store, and stage stop. At the foot of the hill stands a huge sycamore tree, considered one of the oldest in Virginia. Washington area—“Mountain (Veen”, stone part built circa 1735, home of Mrs. Marieta L. Cheatham. Sperryville air e a—“Thornton Hill,” built 1756. home of Mrs. W.M. Fletcher. This is one house where it is definitely known that George Washington slept when he visited his cousins here. This room will be on display. “Rosewood”, built 1735, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Estes. Originally one story and a half house, later raised to two full stories. “Apple Tree Cottage” (Old Cooper Shop) (Home of Mr.’ and Mrs. S.E. Hening. This cottage will also be open in the evening from 8:00 to 10:00 featuring informal ooloifial type garden illuminated “O’Learv’s Cabin”, built in 1740. owned by Mrs. J.W. Fletcher. Tine frontier log cabin with wide boards and exposed beaded beams. Wood ville area—“Stonehaven" built circa 1770, owned bv Mr. and Mrs. George E. Muth. 'Kemper Mansion House”, owned bv Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Jacobs. Interesting period > panelling and exposed beams. F.T. Valiev area—“Piedmont. Guest House”, built circa 1765. owned by Mr. and Mrs. N.K.G. Tholandi Home of the son of Frank Thornton, original settler of the F.T. Valley. Tea will be served at “Mountain Green” oVi Sunday, July 28; at “Thornton Hill”, Monday July 29th and at “Stonehaven”. Tuesday Julv 30th. The price for touring each home is 50 cents but a block ticket may be bought for $1.50 which is good for three days and includes each of these home*. Directions for reaching the houses will be clearly posted along the roads. Three places have been set up in the countv as headquarters for the tour where information, maps and pairtehlets may be had. RiMe School Closes With Picnic The Vacation Bible School conducted at Washington Baptist Church closed on Friday, July 12. The children enjoyed on the last day a picnic of hot dogs with all the trimmings. There were between 55 and 60 children who attended the Bible School. It was enjoyed by all who took part. Four From Rapp*k Attend 4-H Camp One hundred and tom-two 142) top flight 4-H Club members front all parts of Virginia attended the Annual State 4-H Conservation Camp at Camp Farrar, V irginia Beach last week, July 15 through 20th. Selected on the basis of leadership and outstanding 4-H Club work this group of senior 4-11 Club members, between the ages of 14 and 19, attending this junior leadership camp represent the best in 4-H work. Coming from as far west Lee county, a distance of over 500 miles, and as far north as \V nchester many of the campers spent two days enroute to camp. At camp, under the guidance of 30 leaders, county agents, home demonstration agents, and other professional workers who volunteer their services, the boys and girls are receiving instruction on all phases of conservation, both of natural and human resources. Theme of the week’s activities is “Stewardship of our God-Give.^ Resources.” In addition to classes on human resources, soil and water conservation forestry, wildlife conservation, and entomology there is also instruction on various handicrafts, dancing, and recreation leadership. For maii)\of the campers, particularly those from the western part of the state, one of the outstanding activities is swimming in the surf of die Atlantic Ocean and sunning on the wide clean, beach. Campfire programs, square dancing, field trips, and volley ball games keep the campers On the go about every hour of the day. In the evening a vesper service, conducted by tha campers themselves, ties together the thoughts and teachings of the day and allows the boys and girls to express their feelings about the ‘‘Stewardship of Our God-Given Resources.” Those who attended from R~ pahannock County were Carol -i Brown from Sperryville, Randall Updike from Washington, Terry Davis and tJVfrs. Barbara Gentry from Flint Hill. FIRE and RESCUE SQUAD NOTES The Flint hfill Volunteer Fire Company answered two calls during the past week, one on Friday and the other on Saturday. Both! were brush fires near the “Old H addux Place” and firemen investigating said it was evident that the fires were started by cigarettes. Why not crush that cigarette. Both fires were quickly brought under control.
