This time of year, most of the nation’s teenagers are in school, eager to learn and happy to be there. A few, however, already are thinking of how pleasant it is outside and how nice it would be to have a full-time job; As the year ffoed on, they’ll be harder to keep in school.

They will need to stop and realize that it actually pays to stay in school

A high school diploma can mean a great deal to an individual in terms of his earning power. Beyond that his training can mean a great deal to the nation.

A recent survey reveals that the average high school graduate will earn $30,000 more during his lifetime than the average student who quits high school. He will make $50,000 more than the average person who goes only through elementary school- •

Of course, college graduates earn relatively more than . high school graduates.

^o, those students who quit school so they can begin to earn salaries are fooling themselves- They are willing t* settle for little today at the expense of so much more in the future.

Right now, an estimated 77 per cent of the nation’s youngsters 16 and 17 years old are in school. But four of every 10 will drop out of high school before graduation. Only about 12 per cent of them will earn college degrees.

There is plenty of room in the United States for those willing to educate themselves- The country is short of skilled workers, technicians and professionals.

Of 71 occupations for which shortages are reported every single one requires at least a high school education; Unemployment is one and one-half times as high among young men w*ho quit before finishing high school as among those with diplomas.

No one can force a youngster to complete his education But if he thinks for a while, he will realize that it pays to stay in school.
