TLis past weekend, for the second time in less than a month we as citizens of Rappahannock County have witliess-iu the end results of our failures. To these families who have lost sons and daughters, we express our deepest sympathy. We believe in some small way we know the pain that is in theii hearts.

As we awaken to the fact that this could have been any one of oat sons of daughers may God help us to take some positive action before it happens again- And we can be* assured unless we do something it will happer\ again, and soonThese

young folks as well as hundreds of others were on the highways, either going-to or from an area where they could find entertainment and recreation- They had to go els where for it. There is not a place in Rappahannock County where young people can go and enjoy the things

that young folks like to do. Outside of restaurantjyand beer parlors there is not a place in the county a young person can go to so much as even play a juke box.

We live today in a different world than we did twenty-^ live years ago, but we are still trying to live as we did then. It won’t work. Either we advance with time or it will leave us behind. Either we provide recreation for our young people or they will go elsewhere to find it.

With fire halls, church social halls and civic club rooms sitting idle week after week we stand by and let this needless death toll rise.

Let’s ask ourselves a-soul-searching, WHY? I won’t believe it is because we don’t really care about our young folks. I feel that we do care, but because of the failure of some groups to take positive action in this direction we have done nothingWith

the availability of a suitable building (and there are several available) in our various communities are there not enough interested parents available to act as leaders and chaperones to really get something worth while started? I can assure you it won’t be an easy task- It will make demands both on your time and money but the end results will be worth much more than either of those- It will mean lives saved.

This then is our challenge. Will we accept it or continue to bury our heads in the sand not caring to see the task that is before us?
