The Same Need More Plainly Shown

Several weeks ago we predicted that Little Rock would see the last vestiges of State sovereignty die- For a fewr days the Federal Government hesitated Then Mr. Eisenhower sent in his bayonet wedding paratroopers, and tore asunder the Constitution he had sworn to uphold and defend. The prediction had come true.

Years ago Adolph Hitler and Joseph Stalin adopted the handy practice of twisting w ords and distorting phrases to suit their purposes. The Russian called his ruthless dictatorship a* “people’s, democracy”. Hitler said if you tell a big enough lie, and tell- it often enough, eventually people will believe* it. Our American “Liberals” have learned this game well. The Constitution of the UnteiJStates is a short, easy to read document. It was written by men w*ho had just successfully revolted against a form of dictatorship. These men xusted the people and feared a concentration of power. With certain practical exceptions, they believed the people could best rule themselves by their states, where their representatives would be within easy reach. To embody those certain excepiions, the states entered into the contract called the Constitution. In clear words it sets forth by number the powers given to the Federal Government, and any power not so given “is reserved to the states”. But look what our “liberals” have turned the Constitution into! Where in that document is the grant of power so terrifyingly used in Little Rock? .

As terrifying as the- Little Rock episode is, it should come as no real surprise- Mr- Eisenhower in 1952 ran on the platform promise that he believed each state could best rule and regulate itself. Thus he seduced many Southern voters, but how long did it take him to put the lie to his own statement? And when he said, in a preess conference recently, “I shall never use trops to enforce integration.” did he think that the American public, like him, had become such strangers^ to the truth that his falsehood would pass unnoticed? Poor Mr- Dalton squirms while tthe chairman of the Albemarle Republican party repudiates him, and a member of the Republican Committee of Maaisou TJount.v rides in a car displaying a Lindsay Almond sticker. The Democrats in Virginia rejoice, for who would be so foolish as to vote for Dalton? , Yet soon this Democratic joy must turn to frustration. After a victory* this fall, what then? The Virginia Democrats return to^the National organization, with a Presidenial election coming up. There, they are unwanted guests, out of place, just as the Virginia Republicans are out of place in their National organization. And so the basic issue remains; Are we to have a party we can vote for? Is there, really, any difference between the Republicans and the Democrats? Isn’t it past time for a real second party?
