SLAUGHTER CATTLE . Virginia cattle prices are fairly safe for the next few weeks, may„be even strong enough to weather without much trouble the small dip that sometimes comes in February as more fed cattle are finished and marketed.

Receipts are showing up light in the state, as expected with the local feed shortage, and Western marketings are, too. Federally inspected slaughter has been averaging around 12% below last year in the past few weeks. - A-man’s feed supply and animal quality will be, the gauges to follow On selling at good or choice grades .between-now and Hiring. An*adequate feed supply will find its best market in 'finishing out to top quality; buying feed stacks quality against cost. j /

Virginia auctions at the end of last week: choice steers avraged $25.25, 50c to $1.25 higher; good steers, $24. Chicago markets, setting a new high for fat steers since October 1956, were 50c to $1.50 higher at a $32.50 top; $25.50 to $28 75 for high good to choice.

The usual egg cycle is underway—prices trending downward now as production picks up seasonally—-but a brief improvement could show up in February if production' feels extreme cold weaither much longer. | New York prices may be showing « little reaction already, having picked up 2c ast week. Virginia prices were mostly steady at 39c in Richmond and. Harrisonburg; 40 tp 42c in Roanoke. Norfolk picked up a cent to average 40c a dozen for Grade A Large.
