IA COUNTY SIGN ORDINANCE
This week Orange Count’s Planning Commission approved a billboard ordinance that will be submitted to the Board of Supervisors for its final action. The proposed ordinance requires a permit for the erection of signs at a fee of $2.50 for small signs and $5.00 for larger signs. Thereafter, there would be an annual inspection fee of $2.50 per sign. All signs must be 500 feet from any other advertising sign and must follow/setback regulations. f
We think the ideh of a billboard ordinance an excellent one. The State of Virginia, and particularly our Piedmont area is known for its beauty. Because of this w;e are i yearly attracting more tourist trade. As this trade increases, roadside business increases. To protect the unspoiled beauty of our country side, one of the most important steps we can take is to adopt such a sign law.
Perhaps the local garden clubs .could make it a special project to press for the adoption of a billboard law. The only criticism we have of the Qr&nge County ordinance is that the minimum distance betwSensigns should be raised from 500 feet to 1600 feet. \ _ _
