A Euivr-'esr. corn borer density survey conducted In 10 Northern Virginia Counties by Arthur Morris. Entomologist, Economic Insect Detection and Reporting Service, in late September and early October, shows 78 percent of stalks examined to be infected with an average of 2.9 larvae ped stalk. In Rappahannock ffve com fields were inspected (25 stalks per field). The average number o{ larvae per 100 stalks was found to be 166.4 iajl* 1958 as compared to 92.0 a year ago.
While the density of corn borer population in Rappahannock may not st present constitute any real problem to mechanical corn harvesting in the county as a whole, reports indicate this pest is a decided problem to some growers and therefore an increased knowlege on control methods may be worthy of your consideration. Those noticing heavy break-over of stalks may want to stop by the office for a copy of The European Com Borer and Its Control."
