“My country ’tis of thee, sweet land of liberty.” How often, we sing these familiar lines, but do we ever stop to think of their meaning? Yes, America is a land of freedom. This we take for granted. But do we ever give any thought to who made this possible? We, the American people have not always had the many freedoms that we enjoy today. To whom does the credit belong? The people who settled,North America were an assortment of aristocrats, freeholders, debtors, tradesmen and ^aves. There were skilled and unskilled; educated and illiterate; brave and' weak. Most of them came to the colonies because they wanted to escape military, religious and economic persecstppn, while others^ came because they had the spirit of adventure and wanted better lives for themselves and their children. They had the choice of giving up their beliefs or their homes, and of course we realize today the importance of the choice-they made.
We owe so much to our forefathers, those audacious few, who were willing to dare and then to share. It was they who gave us ~ freedom of speech, religion, press and the many freedoms that we enjoy today. They were the ones who started a crusade for freedom. In the spirit of those crusaders’ lives was a glorious adventure. They were dull of fight, daring people or circumstances to depress them on their road to victory. . They were men of courage. Courage, to their realization, was not the absence of fear, it was conquest of it. Not until they dared to attack did they meet their fears. They realized that unless they dared to secure the freedoms for which they yearned they could not win. Deep down in every heart Vi'/i the desire to be somebody, to get somewhere. They didn’t sit waiting for the opportunity. They found that opportunities did not corqp to those who waited. They were captured by those who attacked.
