How Long ?
It was a i.eautiful summer day, just right for a ride to Berryville and a try at Senator Byrd’s picnic. The company was congenial and the trip leisurely, so that by the time we arrived, the orchard was full of cars, and most of the people were eating.
We saw John Woodward there, apparently enjoying himself chewing on a joint of the Senator’s fried chicken, although we were later given to understand he was really eating political crow. Lick Middleton, the Republican from Aloemarle was there, too, while Democratic. C. Compton of Greene we could find nowhere. Atfthfc-iast moment, the politic! slate dutifully filed in and sat together on apple boxes. Reluctantly we admitted they did look like “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil.”
After some irrelevant talk about apples, the Senator climbed up on the stand and delivered what everyone had come to hear, his political comments. The most memorable of these concerned his duel with Pennsylvania’s liberal Senator Clark. It seems Senator Clark had, without success and in the face of custom and curtesy, attempted to unseat Senator Byrd as head of the powerful Finance Committee. Said Senator Byrd, “If ever I found myself voting with Senator Clark, I would want my head examined.”
Our return trip was as leisurely as our drive up, affording us ample time to review the events of the day and the Senator’s comments. When the subject of Senator Clark was broached, one of our group observed, “You know, it’s an interesting thing, both Mr. Byrd and Mr, Clark are members of the same party.” But then, so are Mr. Goldwater and Mr. Javits members of the Republican Party. ^
And so, Dick Middleton the Republican, went on to defeat E. C. Compton in a district that easily elected Democrat Governor Harrison. How long can it .continue? Pobably as long as there are postmasterships and Congressional Committees. B.C.B. Jr.
