Cumberland Receives Decade-Old Plans For War Memorial Plans for a war memorial, orig inally suggested over a decade ago, were discussed by a group of Cumberland county citizens Mon day. After World War II, a fund drive was conducted to raise money for the erection of a me morial to Cumberland's World War II veterans. The monument was to be placed in the court house yard, where there is a sim lar monument to veterans of the War Between the States. Approximately $600 were col lected at the time, and then noth ing else was done. Various com munity organizations have tri^d to get at the money from time to time through the years, and fi nally Monday a group of donors decided to go ahead with the orig nal plans for a monument. M. E. Blanton, who was chair man of the original group, was continued in that office, as was Mrs. Eleanor S. Nuckols, treas urer. J. T. Williams was elected secretary. At the Monday meeting, the secretary was instructed to ob tain a list of all Cumberland cit izens who had served in the arm ed forces during World War I. as well as the World War II veter ans.
