4 N effort is being made this week to raise * $15,000 to complete the Southside Com Minity Hospital. When completed 100 beds ami 20 bassinets will be available for pa tients. The present demand for hospital can can be met adequately then. The cost of completing the hospital is 199,500, which will complete the second floor, now ‘‘hulled in”, to provide an ob tetrical department of 18 beds and 18 bassinets. Also, 11 beds will be provided for medical patients in the area now oc cupied by the Negro section, which will be moved to the east wing of the hospital. The area now occupied by the obstetrical department will be used for medical treat ment. Tims, the plan as conceived hv the architects in 1949 will have been com pleted. and the hospital will be an efficient operating unit. It will he recalled that the expansion program was begun in 1949. An estimated l !,st was made and a campaign to raise the necessary $255,000, our share, was sub scribed. The bids were opened in August of 1950. In the intervening period, the Korean “Incident” had occurred and prices of everything increased, with the result that the second floor had to be eliminated and a second campaign for $54,600 was neces ary to build the Mettauer Wing with the -I'cond floor eliminated. As construction proceeded and the hospital wing took -haw in 1951 it became apparent to every 1 nr that the walls and roof should be built r »ho second floor.
