Memorial Day Began in South Editor, The Herald: , ‘Fourscore and Eleven Years Ago'—The Civil War was over in • the South where tinder warmer skies and with more poetic temperaments, symbols and emblems are better j understood than in the practical North, April 26. 1866. the widows, mothers, and children of the Con federate dead went out and strewed their graves with flowers: at many; places the women scattered -them impartially also over the jesting j places of the Union soldiers. April 26 was chosen as the anni-1 versary of the last day of existence ; of the Confederate States, that be ing the date in 1865 when Gen. Jos eph E. Johnston surrendered at Durham, N C. The movement spread rapidly over the South. Several years later Gen. John A. Logan, Commander m-Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, designated May 30 as Decoration Day to be observed by ' the people of the North. He did so after his wife suggested the custom following a celebration'of Southern Memorial Day which she had wit nessed on April 26. 1868. at Holly wood Cemetery in Richmond. Vir ginia. May 30 continued to be known as Decoration Day until after 1045, when the people of the northern states dropped that title and began using the Southern term. Memorial Day.
