Rappahannock . . . A Subsidiary —Pf
Last week, you will recall, George Allison, county agent of Page helped me with some 4-H work. George proceeded. to kid me about Rappahannock being a subsidiary of Page. * . > made me kinda mad . . but then the more I think about it the more truth there is to George’s statement. In fadt I hear that Page people reason ‘‘why should I buy land when it can be rented so cheaply in Rappahannock?”
In contridiction of this, however, I know of the following Page people who own land in Rappahannock: Messers Varner, Munson, Spitler, Sours, Hershberberger, Grove, S. L. Thomas, and S. H. Thomas. Then there is Mrs. Siebert and another party who owns a field once part of the Gore place. "To me the puzzling factor is why on earth do our people rent their pastures to anyone at such give away prices Prices that were established during the drought of the early thirties. . . strictly depression prices!
The last time I wrote about this uneconomical practice grape vine reports were “it’d be different if Bill Lyne were looking for pasture to ; rent” Well folks I’m renting a small boundary of grass and was looking for it at the time the article was written. Also, Pm gladly paying f double what die Page party did last year and fed on the laud all winter
• yes» I realise some will ^ say Tut a fool or t sucker for doing '-•so; however I say that anyone having ; comparable grass for rent that is accepting $1.50 per head per month or $1&Q0 per head per grazing season ne^ds to do some more figuring on what present day costs are in the way pf: labor, fencing; lime, fertilizer, machinery, etc.
I happen to know of one owner that is getting around $25 per head for the season and his grass is worth that. Yet why should others with comparable grass accept $8-$10? ? It beats me, yet there are at least eight land owners who are doing just that and the tenants don’t feed on the land either! What about this situation. . . would one of you readers express your thoughts via the News next week.
Engagement Announced
Rev. and Mrs. W. B. Dennis of Castleton are announcing the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Alice Joye, to Ralph . W. (Bill) Payne, son'of Mr. and Mrs. Frank C. Payne of Culpeper. The wedding will take place Sunday, June 8, at 1:30 p.m. on the lawn of the bride's parents. A reception will immediately follow the ceremony. No cards are being sent.
