The Youthful Driver has gotten , a lot of publicity in recent years. He has bfeen pictured, at one and the same time, as a willful breaker of the traffic codes, and a blameless product of negligent parents; as the world’s worst driver with die faultiest judgment, and the world's best driver with triggerquick reflates; as a hot-rodding menace with an empty-headed leer,, and a responsible citizen angered by the antics of hfe lunatic contemporaries.
. Statistically, his accident fecord has been terrible.
Youthful drivers make up 18 per cent" of all licensed drivers in ■ the country, hut are involved jn 26 per cent of the fatal accidents.
Those in the 16 to 20 age group have five times as many accidents as drivers in the 451 to 50 age group—-although both groups have about the same number of drivers.
What’s more, youthful driver accidents are increasing. There wfcre 7,800 young men and women killed by automobiles in 1952. There were 8,100 killed in 1953.
The newspaper stories sound "monotonously alike. “Two 16year-old high school juniors were' killed last night when the 1947 sedan in. which they were riding jdunged .off Manchester road "about two miles east of the intersection witlr Dutchess turnpike and crashed into a tree . . . they were racing ... the sheriff said the "Jordan car passed the automobile -'driven by Hanscher at the railroad underpass at Manchester bridge. -'Both vehicles were traveling"*’at about 45 miles an hour. The sheriff said that Jordan came up-*" on another car and turned out to pass in' the left lane.
