I was impressed by the substantial agreement between rural and urban citizens of the 7th Congressional District, as reflected by their replies to my questionaire on public issues. For example on agri' cultural questions, the five cities and fourteen counties voted, the same, with the city folks and farm folks apparently thinking along similar lines. The only difference was that Rockbridge, A fn h u r s t and Nelson Counties favored thef • soil bank by small margins, while the other 16 jurisdictions opposed it.
The 7th District aggreed with the President on sixteen of the thirty-one questions on which his ■ Administration has taken a position, and disagreed with him ori fifteen. On twelve of the questions, all nineteen ‘cities and counties supported the President. As he does they favored military and econo, mic foriegn aid; further reduction of tariffs affiliation with the international Organization for • Trade Co-operation; limitation on the amount of price-support money going to any one farmer; tax exemption for gasoline farmers use off the highways; flexible price supports; a balanced budget and .debt reduction before taxes are cut; Federal regulation of union pension funds and public disclosure of their finances, and increased postage rates for newspapers and magazines, but not for parcel post. In addition, all except Highland County favored the President’s proposal for a new Federal highway program.
