The much heralded New York and Chicago hit play, “ Inherit - the Wnid,” starring Melvyn Douglas, will blow into the National Theatre, Washinton, on Monday night, Dec. 24, for three ' holiday weeks. Presented and directed by Herman Shumlin, “Inherit the Wind” is outstanding not only as a play but in size of production. As such, it is just about the biggest non-musical to come out of Broadway in years. A full 70-ft. baggage car is required for the electrical equipment alone.

Melvin Douglas, who heads a stage filling cast of 65, scored originally in the Broadway production. It was drama in itself -the way that this star replaced the stricken Paul Muni during the Broadway run, giving second life to “Inherit the Wind.” Douglas’ accession to the lead proved one of the rare instances where a show became a twice-ovrr New York hit.
