The nation’s tital tax bill this year, federal, stsfre and local, is estimated at llf| billion dollars. This is estimated to be one-third of the nation’^ total income. We work four montlis out of twelve just to pay the tax collector.
Of the 110 billion. 82 billion is federal taxes—thp states, counties and cities must somehow pay for their schools, hifeipitals. and all other local tax supported services from what is eft—28 billion. Most of us are cuite conscious of the state and loejal tax burden— such taxes for tpe most part are levied and col leered directly. Yet such taxes are only about *4 of the total tax bill. The other threefourths—in federal taxes, with the exception of the ii come tax, is generally collected in a manner which more often than not may fall to impress the citizen that he is actually being taxed.
