Each bull will J* graded the morning of the sale and must grade at least Good or higher to be sold in the sale. The grades— Fancy, Choice, or Good—will be marked on each animal. The three "man grading committee will consist of a breeder representative, a VPI Extension Service representative, and a Virginia Grading Service representative. In addition, Dr. S. L. Kallison, VPI Extension Veterinarian, will examine each bull for soundness. .
A sale of this type, with’ the bulls being handled in this manner, and coming from reputable breeders, gives the commercial cattleman a feeling of confidence in his purchase. The sale is advertised as a commercial bull sale, however, many of the bulls will be of sufficient quality to head purebred herds,*1 For further information or catalogues on this event, write G. B. Navy To Send 500 To
College Each Year
Fiye hundred officers ®trained in the field of science will be added to the ranks of the Navy and Marine Corps annually under a new educational program announced today by Secretary of the Navy, Thomas S. Gates. Beginning with the school year 19581959 that number of enlisted men will be enrolled in civilian institutions of higher learning four year courses leading to a degree of Bachelor of Science and to cpmmssions in the Naw.
Emphasis in their studies will . be placed on mathematics and the physical sciences. During summer vacation periods, the students will be assigned to Navy laboratories and other scientific establishments to study application of the sciences. The basis of selection of enlisted men for this higher study will be intelligence and aptitude. Those considered qualified but who lack sufficient high school credits for college entrance will be given opportunity to earn those credits.
Students will receive the pay allowances of their rates while attending college. The Navy Department will pay costs of their education. They will be required to remain on active duty as officers for a period equal to the time theyare enrolled in the program.
A selection board consisting of Naval officers and evilians exper. ienced in the field of education will be convened to pass upon applicants for the new. program. Those selected will be-offered for enrollment in colleges and universities subject to the rules of the 'institutions concerned.
