Ode To April We have just finished our last Federal income tax return for the year, and our last State income tax return too. Not ,fy only th^t, we-have filed our 941 Social Security for the . first quarter 1958" and to make it all the rosier, we have in the mail, fully executed with check attached thereto, the first quarter unerri^loyment compensation commission report (State, that is; the Federal comes later.) This is the price we pay for the welfare Estate. Forms ' 'upon forms, followed by reports, andt with each, a little vcheck that quietly saps the producers of this country. Only 21/4 here and 2.7% there, and so forth. Add them all • up, and they can often equal the difference between profit and loss. No matter, the welfare state must be kept going, and the give away# increased. When a recession hits, what do our leaders tpll us Says Mr. Truman to a Senate ComV mittee, cut taxes $5,000,000,000.00 per year and increase spending $5,000,000,000.00 per year and we dan buy prosperity by going in debt another 15 billion dollars. Who pays for the prosperity? Let our children take c$re of that. But the only reason we can borrow pur way into prosperity is because lenders have faith that generations following us ,, will carry our debt. We trust future generations will see the wisdom of our enjoying prosperity on their money. Yet withall, as large and as influential a paper as the Washing•'y ton Post has the nerve to proclaim, that what the ex-bankrupt from Missouri advocated is “exactly whatthis country needs to hear," in an editorial aptly headed *^lr.
