Members of. Lions Clubs of northern and eastern Virginia are joinihg in a concentrated effort to establish a eye bank program in cooperation with the Hunton Memorial Eye Blank in Richmond. The Eye Bank, established with a legacy l«;ft by the late Eppa Hunton, works closety with die Medical College of Virginia, and is associated with its research and pathology departments.

The eye bank story is by no means new.;. Records indicate th^t corneal repairs were attempted' as far back aitthe eighteenth century. However, the actual storing of eyes for future use is rather new, having come into practice within ■ the fast few’ years. , ' . . Thef unction of the eye bank is to obtain eyes and deliver them ta the doctors who are able to perform skillful operations which improve or restore sight through cor- - iieal or therapeutic transplants or vitreous implants., Other parts of the! eye are stored for use in invaluable research and study to further advance knowledge of the eye und eventually find cures for diseases of the eye and way’s to prevent blindness and restore sight. The program has been endorsed by all religions.
