bad news
Not all bad new* is as grtm as some may think.
Often, it’s the dark dead and not the silver lining
that people choose to focus on,
'the stories about two students recently charged with possession of narcotics on school grounds elicited comments that we were focusing on bad news instead of the good.
Yet most of what was said in both stories was how the school - and the new principal in particular - was pro-actively dealing with an issue that every school district and principal must foce.
It could be that no one likes to think about drugs in our idyllic part of the world. Or maybe it is because with this issue - like many others - the linger points right back to the larger community as a whole. These two students got the drugs horn someone and the original source was more than likely an adult right here in Rappahannock County.
We hope the two students receive, as school policy mandates, the counseling they need to interdict now what could become a terrible and destructive habit. Prom that perspective alone, notifying both the wider community and the student body at RCKfcv that drugs will not be tolerated at school is not only good, but a necessary news story to report - especially when there is clear evidence that the school is sticking to its policies and enforcing them rigorously.
In the end, the stories are not only about the two students, but about the schools and our community and how we deal with unpleasant realities. Stick our head in the sand, pass it oft as too negative or as just "boys being boys?" C>r do we take action? In the end, school officials can't operate in a vacuum and it is vital and necessary that students, parents and the community know what's going on. That’s why we report the news. . . both 'good' and 'bad.'
