In the days of his youth Sir Charles Dllke showed ardent Republican tendencies, and made many speeches in the house of commons and throughout the country against monarchy. Perhaps the best comment on the episode was that of Queen Victoria herself. It has been said that Dllke's father had been on terms of Intimacy with the prince consort. Tho queen recalled that she had stroked Dllke's hair when he was but a child, "perhaps," she said, "I rubbed it the wrong way."
