However, it will be several years before many schools take up this redirected education, as it cannot come suddenly. It must come gradually with the conditions and ability of the forces to carry on such work. In the meantime much good can be done through other sources in helping the boys and girls in their farm life. It is to meet this need that the Junior work of the Extension Department is conducted. The work began in the spring of 1909 when about 500 boys and girls agrfeed to carry on an individual ear test with ten ears of corn. Nearly one-half of them purchased the seed they began with from some well known corn breeder in the state. Instructions were sent them throughout the season in testing the seed, planting, cultivating, making records and harvesting the crop. During the short course the following winter nearly all of these young farmers competed for several thousand dollars in premiums offered for the best samples of corn exhibited.
