Sometimes I read the poets who Write modern poetry; And I’ve about concluded that They do not write for me. They write a lot of highbrow verse » That critics say is grand; Hut it’s too deep for folks like me To like or understand. And when it comes to free verse stuff, I feel I must be dense; To me it seems a lot of tripe Which lacks both rhyme and sense. 1 once subscribed to “Poetry,” On which great poets dote; But found it full of free verse line Some guys of genius wrote. Though critics say this stuff is great And high class poetry. It is too far above my head, To have appeal for me. 1 much prefer the poets who Can write a simple lay, So folks like me can understand Just what they mean to say. 1 like to read these poets who Some lines to us impart, Which give to us the thoughts they have Within their mind and heart. •‘Such songs have power to quiet The restless pulse of care.
