If Virginia should experience a polio epidemic this summer, gam ma Globulin will be available as a stop-gap, according to Mrs. Herschel L. Burrough, State Ad visor on Women's Activities for the National Foundation for In fantile Paralysis. "It should be remembered," said Mrs. Burrough. "that gamma glo bulin can only be used to reduce the crippling effects of polio. It is! not a preventive. The preventive is! the vaccine which has just been | discovered, but which is not yet: ready or available for widespread ! use. Many further tests must be 1 made before its use can be gen ' oral." In order to fill •the need until i such time as the vaccine can be !5erfected for general use, the Na- | tional Foundation has made ar rangements to purchase all com mercial gamma globulin available at an expense of five million dol-: lars of March of Dimes funds. This commercial gamma globulin will be given to a distributive pool, in all probability the National Re search Council, which will allocate the necessary amounts to the var ious states on a formula yet to be developed.
