Born and reared on a Saratoga county. New York. farm. Dr. Car man taught in a district school for two ycar> following gradua tion from high school. He hold the degrees of Ph. B.. Pd B . and A M. from Syracuse University. From 1914 to 1917. he was instruc tor and assistant professor in his tory and political science at Syra cuse University. He received the PhD. from Columbia University in 1919. and since that time has been a member of the department of history at that institution. He was Dean of Columbia College from 1943 to 1950. Despite his teaching and administrative in terests. lie has found time for re search and publication. Recently with Harold C. Syrett he publish ed The History of the American People. Dr. Carman's itinerary while in the Richmond area will also in- ‘ elude the College of William and Mary, the University of Rich mond and the University of Vir- j sinia.
