Busy Time With
Proposed Budget
Via changing the 10 cent current levy from a school construction levy to a general fund levy and cutting a proposed $2,632'school housing fund, the Board of Super- , visors squeezed the Tentative Bu<Jget into the alloted bounds with-, out proposing a change of the $325 levy.
Wednesday's meeting of the supervisors was devoted to the proposed budget, and the considera- ) tion of the above cuts along with, a cut in the Welfare Department administrative expenses.
The Supervisors will meet on April 4 ft 10:00 a.m. in the orart house to hear citizens for or> against the proposed budget (as corrected - in Wednesday’s meeting.)' . ' V '
Miss Ruth Stevens presented the tenative budget, explaining the reasons for increases and deductions in the different department figures. C. J. Miller, citizen on the Budget committee, stated that the originally proposed budget could not be carried thru unless a levy of 20 cents be adopted. Board. Chairman, W. C. Campbell, believing the county unable to beat the additional levy, hid reviewed the proposed budget looking for . possible deductions. He listed the ones given above. A. H. Buckner made a motion that the 10 cent levy for school construction be eliminated. Henry Wood seconded the motion and it was passed unamiously. The $7,500 in the fund will, of course, be left in the fund. Answering supervisor Eddie Estes, Supt. Q. D. Gasque, explained that this money could not be transfer-K ed to the General fund.
The $2,133.08 school housing fund which was cut out was for the purpose of repair and replacement of equipment etc. Where asked if he thought the school could do without this fund, Supt. Gasque replied, “Well, I can cut off one toe and still walk, but not as comfortably.’- (When talking with Supt. .Gasque following the meeting, this reporter learned that he fully expected that in another year when thjgrif is not the $5000 reassessment fee, the above fund will be adopted.) ' Supervisor Estes asked if the question of the H. D. agent had been considered expressing sentiments that a savings could be made here. The board was reminded of the opposition that this suggestion had received at an earlier date. Supervisor Buckner stated - that 75-80% of the people in his district were opposed to it; Supervisor Wood believed,that 99% of his district would be against it. Supervisors Foster and Campbell stated that their districts, Wakefield and Hampton respectively, wanted the clubs to continue, and were for retaining the agent. The proposed budget waS ununiously passed as corrected, calling for no additional levy. It will >e published and a meeting held before it is passed finally. Resident Engineer P. D. Coldiron asked the board that the public hearing on road problems be set for the April meeting. This was iccepted. The newly appointed Civil Defense Coordinator H. S.
