Fredericlcson of Hi Jackson, have been named io the Virginia State Apple Commission by Parke Lady Players Return To Hot Dof Stands After One Is Kayoed On Field Over 300 persons attended the exciting donkey baseball game, sponsored by the Castleton Community Volunteer Fire Co. at Castleton Tuesday night, including 2 full car loads who came all the way from the state of Maryland. The donkeys were furnished by the Buckeye Donkey Ball Co. from Ohio. There were players from Rappahannock and Culpeper Counties and two players from Maryland, including three local women players. After the game went on for awhile, one of the ladies was thrown off by one of the donkeys and knocked out for awhile. After this, the ladies decided that it was better for them to go back to the stands and sell hot dogs. Everyone enjoyed the game very much and said that it was the most exciting donkey ball games they had ever attended. There was a number drawing on three cakes. Two of these cakes were donated by Ben Curtis of the Holsum Bread Co. and Mrs. Mamie Leake. One was baked bjT two other ladies. Tessie Stringfellow was the winner of 2 of the cakes and Junior Hitt won the other. The Fire Co. cleared $79.67 on the game and food, after paying all expenses, including insurance on the players. Bo; Joins “Greatest Show On Earth” Ralph G. Bolen, former U. S. Marine, son of the late G. N. Bolen and Mrs. Lucy Dodson Bolen, is with the Ringling Bros., Bamum and Bailey Circus this season as an animal keeper. Ralph was formerly with the National Zoological Park, in Washington, D. C. as animal keeper. He also was located at one time at.the U. S. Navy Yard, Washington, D. C. As usual, Ralph is very enthusiastic about his job, and friends in Rappahannock are always glad to have news of him. In a letter recently he says, “The Greatest Show on Earth” is touring the Northern states. Later they will tour the Mid and Far Western States. “Circus people are wonderful and nice. Bruce, church organist played the wedding music. The bride who was given in marriage by her mother, wore a white organdy dress with .white lace accessories. She carried a white prayer book topped with white carnations. A reception gras held at home of the bride’s mother lowing the ceremony. Mrs. H. Winfrey and Mrs. John R. Frizzell, Jr., presided at the punch bowls. Mrs. W. Arthur Miller and daughter, Evelyn Tyler Miller assisted with the serving. Mrs. Minnie Lee Burke Mrs. Minnie Lee Burke, widow of Albert Burke of'Woodville, died at the Miller Nursing Home, Woodstock, Va. early Sunday morning after several years of declining health. Deceased was 79 years of age and was the daughter of the late William J. Carpenter and Annie E. Beasley, his wife of Rappahannock County, Va. She is survived by one son, Charles J. Burke of Culpeper, and two grandchildren, Harris 'and William Burke of Culpeper, Va. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock from the Woodville Baptist. Church with interment in the church cemetery. The Rev. George Bowman, III and the Rev. W. Franklin Cale conducted the last rites. Active pallbearers were: J. E, Orange, Willie Dulaney, R. J. Utz, Lee Bradley, Robert Hawkins and E. T. Willis. Honorary pallbearers were Preston Browning, Edward Hankins, Burton Orange, Cary Fox, Collier Fox, Lawrence Burke, Powell Button, Rufus Jenkins, Charlie Jenkins, T. B. Fletcher, Lacy Orange, J. L. Citizenship, the group decided to choose their officers by methods used by the two major parties-ofthe country. Following the Annual Banquet at the V. F. W. Hall in Sperryville, (which was much enjoyed and left the young group in excellent spirits and in “love and " harmony” with their companions) _ a convention was held, proceeded ’ by the traditional caucus. - After much speech-making, the Alphas nominated Joan Nethers for President and the Omesras ' chose Julian Brown as their stan-. • 4ard bearer. In the balloting that followed, the Omegas were successful and Julian Brown was declared President of the group. Other -officers elected were: Joan Nether a, Vice-President, Shirley Brown, Secretary and Judy Black, Treasurer. The councilors for the group who have done so much to help make it a successful youth organization are Mrs. Martha Ann Critxer, Mrs. Virginia Estes, Mrs. Catherine Brown and Rev. A. D. Goodson. First Aid Course To Begin At Flint HiO Those Interested in taking the Red Cross First Aid Course for the purpose of organizing a Rescue Squad in. Flint Hill are urged to come to the Fire House on Thursday, July 6, at 7:30 p.m. Dr. Edwin Eastham will be the instructor. The Course will be open to the - general public. Virginia. - Miss Paula Miller was tapped for the 4-H honor society, the All Stars at Short Course held at VPI Blacksburg, Friday evening, June 22. Only those dub members of highest calibre and character are asked to join this group. They must be recommended by extension workers, their records investigated and their <jonduct judged satisfactorily before they can be invited to join. Sunday evening guests of Mr. and Mrs. Joel Jenkins were Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Hawkins, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Brown and son of Front Royal. Mrs. Bebe, Davison of Arlington is the house guest of Mr. and Mrs. M.'R. Bradford and family. Mrs. J. P. Cook visited her daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Walker in Arlington, Va. Glen Williams who is employed at Skyline, spent Monday at his home. Mrs. Wade Pullen was hostess to the combined home makers clubs from Amissville and Flint Hill, Tuesday evening. TTiere were about thirty women and children vyho enjoyed the demonstration on barbecue cooking. Using an old ham boiler lined with foil and charcoal for fuel, Mrs. Powers, home agent showed the ladies how to broil chicken, corn and potatoes •on the grill and in the coals. She also prepared a meal in a can, enough for two people. This was cooked in the coals. Some of the ladies helped with the demonstration and cooked a stew, prepared hot bread and a relish tray. The hostess served hot coffee with theV food. Flint Hill W. S. C. S. met with Mrs. C. G. Reid in Washington Thuijwlay evening. Rev. .A. D. Goodson was present and gave a report on the recent annual conference in Harrisonburg. Mrs. W. A. Buntin, county welfare worker gave a report on her work, telling the women how people wens eligible to get public welfare assistance, and how the funds were not enough to care for children and aged people who were helpless. She asked that the group consider clothing one child as a project. This was not voted upon at the meeting but was tabled to be discussed at the next meeting. Sunday guests of Mrs. J. C.
