Leeway Farm, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Leon T. Greenaway of Washington, was high bidder on the Champion Hamp ram at the Winchester Ram Show and Sale held at Farmers Livestock Exchange on Monday, July 9th. This ram was consigned by Tex Telson Jr. of Orlean, who also showed the third place ram, is a grandson of the famous Goldmine and out of an Alex Meek ewe. A ram with an exceptionally fine front, Spring of rib and loin should prove a valuable addition to the Leeway flocks.
In all there were 18 Hampshire rams which sold for an average of $76.39.
Other breeds and averages were as follows:
Shropshires, 5 head, $64.50; Southdowns, 2 head, $65.00; Suffolks, 2 head,. $80.00; Oxfords, 2 head, $27.50.
This is the first time that Oxfords, a breed popular in the midwest, had been consigned to a ram sale in Northern Virginia. This sheep resembles the Shropshire in overall characteristics but more nearly approaches the Hamp in size.
