downward, as usual at this time of the year, but late fall market prospects are more encouraging than they were las^ year at this time.
Last year the low came about the second week of December. This year it may come earlier and will be on a higher level.
That prediction is based on the fact that federal inspected slaughter has been higher in September than it was last year—8% for the week ending September 8; 6% above for the week ending September 15th.—yet the spring pig crop* was 8% less than last year. So these earlier marketings may be felt in lighter receipts than had been expected on the late fall market.
Virginia auctions last week averagedlOc up at $16.75; Baltimore unchanged at $17.50; Richmond up $1 to top at 17.25 and western markets, up 50c to $1 to $16.25$16.60.
TURKEYS
The turkey situation may not be as unfavorable as it looked a little while back. The reason: Early slaughter and vigorous movement may absorb a good part of this year’s larger crop and Thanksgiving and Christmas supplies may not be as high as it looked like they’d be.
Slaughter in recent weeks has been 40-50% above last year, and the supply is only about 20 per cent above.
Storage figures show about 6% above last year at the end of August, so those extra turkeys must be going directly to the table.
Virginia may be one of the luck* iest turkev producing areas. We have mostly light birds, and from the figures it looks like this is the kind that has been moving. So we may not be hit quite as hard as we expected, although we’ve still got to move a lot of turkeys this year.
CATTLE
The first week of feeder cattle sales in Virginia brought these results; Culpeper and Buena Vista: rood O' better steers. $19.50 to $22; Bristol, gpod or better steers, $19 - $20. Last year, fancy and choice steers averaged $20; good, SI9 and medium, $19.25.
